… A Minute Meditation

September 21, 2001

Scripture tells us that we are made in God’s image, not because of our bodies, but because we are capable of knowing and loving.

We can know ourselves and love ourselves, however inadequately. God the Father on the other hand knows Himself perfectly, and in this self-knowing generates the Word, the second person of the Trinity, equal to the Father in every way. The love proceeding between the Father and the Son is the Holy Spirit, divine love.

The inner life of the Trinity, therefore, consists in the complete self-giving of Father, Son and Holy Spirit to each other. God created the world and redeemed us out of love, not out of necessity. This is why John can say, “God is love.”

Christ told us to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.  We must, therefore, try to love as selflessly as God.  There is no other way to resemble him.
