We are told that when Mary had conceived the son of God in her womb, she went in haste to the hill country of Judah to Zechariah’s home and for three months took care of Elizabeth until John the Baptist was born.Later on Christ would tell us that the second commandment (love of neighbor) was like the first. Love of God cannot be separated from love of neighbor. For the love that God’s Spirit pours into our hearts should not be contained. It overflows our hearts in acts of service to our neighbors, who are God’s children and our brothers and sisters. Mary, the humble handmaid of the Lord was also the humble handmaid of Elizabeth and Zechariah and the baby John the Baptist. Our Blessed Lady has shown us that the proof of our love for God is the service we offer our neighbor.
