June 20, 2010, Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus said to all: “Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day and follow in my steps.” (Luke 9:23)
READINGS:1. Zechariah 12:10-11;13:1
2. Galatians 3:26-29
3. Gospel of Luke 9:18-24
REFLECTION: Jesus’ invitation does not sound like that of Alexander the Great or of this year’s candidate for governor. He does not try to lure us with magic like the Pied Piper or the Wizard of Oz. But if his invitation is different, so are the rewards he promises: “You will have peace of heart; you will be filled with joy; you will never be alone; and all this you will have forever and ever.”
PRAYER: Jesus, our Lord and our brother, make us more and more aware of your presence in our lives that we might know you better, love you more fully, and live more truly by your example. Amen.
FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:
Monday:
When Jesus invites us to take up our cross, he asks us to accept the challenges and difficulties of life. Reflect on what carrying your cross means to you.
Tuesday:
With the celebration of Father’s Day in June, we should reflect on the qualities of fathers. Pray the Our Father throughout the month. Ask the family especially the children to pray it with you.
Wednesday:
Pray the Family Rosary tonight with the family for all fathers especially those away from their families.
Thursday:
St. Teresa of Avila said that prayer is a “heart-to-heart friendship with one who we know loves us.” Spend time today in silent prayer.
Friday:
In spring, nature begins to come alive. The earth is replenished and is now ready to receive new seeds. Take a walk today or do some activity to enjoy the spring.
Saturday:
Enjoy a cookout or picnic today as we begin to welcome summer.
PRAYER: Lord, Jesus, your message of the Cross has been part of life from the start; and through the Cross, glory has come into the world. May we regard the crosses in our lives as opportunities to grow deeper and closer to You. Amen.
