“He is like a tree planted beside the water that stretches out its roots to the stream.” (Jeremiah 17:8)
READINGS:1. Jeremiah 17:5-8
2. 1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20
3. Gospel of Luke 6:17, 20-26
REFLECTION: The gospel today is about those who are blest. When we say that the poor and the hungry are “blessed” or are “happy,” we must be careful; poverty and hunger are not good. What the gospel is telling us is to be poor in spirit and hungry of heart. It tells us to be filled by the Lord and satisfied with his love.
PRAYER: Father, we pray for those people worldwide, who have so little food, who are always hungry and often die. We pray for all who hunger for friends, for communication, for learning, for justice in the world. Fill them and us with your goodness. Amen.
FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:
Monday:
Think of ways in which people are hungry, basically needy. Appeal to the Lord in prayer to satisfy these needs.
Tuesday:
Reflect on the hungering needs of your own family. Perhaps you could ask at the meal grace that each family member expresses a need that you will all pray about.
Wednesday:
Hunger for nutritious food is very real. Sacrifice some item of food this week and give the money saved to a group that serves the poor.
Thursday:
Pray today for a stronger spirit of love in the world. Pray especially for our leaders.
Friday:
Pray today with the family the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. Pray for World Peace.
Saturday:
Read and reflect on the Gospel for this past Sunday. (Luke 6:17, 20-26)
PRAYER:
Father, we pray for the grace to be poor in spirit. Help us remember that all we have comes from you. Help us wait in joy and in patience and in thankfulness for your blessings. Amen.
