October 18, 2009, 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest . . .” (Mark 10:43)
READINGS:1. Isaiah 53:4-12
2. Hebrews 4:14-16
3. Gospel of Mark 10:35-45
REFLECTION: Those who are truly great can afford to be gentle and supportive, dependable and unselfish. They are willing to give to others a chance toward greater achievement, and they freely compliment others without feeling diminished themselves. The great do not care if anyone knows of their generosity.
PRAYER: Lord, teach us the meaning of true success. Do not let our hearts be led astray by the promise of money and power. Help us to know our talents and our limitations and to use both wisely. Amen.
FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:
Monday:
The readings these Sundays all call us to compare our earthly possessions of things and gifts of self to our total meaning and destiny. Reflect on what success and greatness mean in your life.
Tuesday:
The readings these Sundays are from St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews. Read this entire letter during this week.
Wednesday:
Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary today for families and peace in the world.
Thursday:
Since the readings this week are about power and influence, reflect today on the power and influence that you have with your family.
Friday:
Think today and do something to support those who seem to be “powerless.” Support a charity financially or with your presence.
Saturday:
Relating with family members, especially with children and teens, we could “lord it over them.” They are dependent. They also have the power to manipulate. Discuss this with the family.
PRAYER:
Lord, Jesus, may we learn to love giving. May we learn how much happiness it can bring us. May we learn that when we serve, we are served with the greatest of satisfaction. Amen.
