October 11, 2009, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“God’s word is . . . sharper than any two-edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12)

READINGS:
1. Wisdom 7:7-11
2. Hebrews 4:12-16
3. Gospel of Mark 10:17-31

REFLECTION:  Both the Gospel today and the readings call attention to our spiritual lives and the need to fulfill the deepest desires of our inner self.  They reaffirm that our real desires are not for food, shelter and clothing, but for spiritual satisfaction such as relationships, trust, confidence, inner peace, and self-esteem.  At times we need to take some moments for prayer and reflection, away from “our things,” and get to the root of our needs.

PRAYER:  Lord, give us a love for your word.  Do not let us fear it but help us to welcome it into our ears and hearts and lives.  Amen.

FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:

Monday:
This month we celebrate Columbus Day and the Discovery of America.  This reminds us of new discoveries, unexpected discoveries.  Do something with the family today that has to do with “new discoveries.”

Tuesday:
The readings this week reflect on Wisdom.  Describe what you think are the characteristics of a wise person.  At the table tonight, ask the family to say one characteristic of a wise person.

Wednesday:
Read a Wisdom story today.  If possible, read one to your children.  Try The Little Prince, The Velveteen Rabbit, or one of Aesop’s Fables, e.g., “The Fox and the Leopard.”

Thursday:
Pray with the family the Rosary, using the Mysteries of Light.  Reflect on the needs of children and parents, handicapped persons and the sick.

Friday:
The Gospel this week says, “With God all things are possible.” (Mark 10:27)  Reflect today on your trust in God.

Saturday:
As these October days quickly pass, take some time to do a charitable act for another.  Try to get the whole family involved.

PRAYER:
Lord, Jesus, free us from this world’s money-madness and give us the joy of sharing what we have with one another.  Let us trust in you to meet our needs.  Amen.
