“Take up your cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)

READINGS:
1. Isaiah 50:5-9a
2. James 2:14-18
3. Gospel of Mark 8:27-38

REFLECTION:  The problem of pain, the question of suffering—these have puzzled people for centuries.  As Christians, we must look at something beyond pain at the possibilities it offers us.  If others hurt, we have the chance to comfort.  If we hurt, we have the chance to turn our discomfort into moments of growth and strength.  All of our suffering is redemptive united with Christ and the Church.

PRAYER:  God, our Father, your only Son accepted death on the cross for the salvation of all.  We acknowledge the mystery of the cross on earth.  May we receive the gift of redemption in heaven.  We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:

Monday:
The theme this week is reflection on pain and suffering.  Today unite the sufferings of your own family with those of the entire Church and ask God’s blessings and strength.

Tuesday:
Check your home today; be sure there is a cross someplace prominent, so all will know yours is a household that believes in the redemptive power of the cross.

Wednesday:
Be aware today of the personal things you deny yourself for the sake of your own growth or for the sake of others.  Reflect on what your family as a whole denies for these same reasons.

Thursday:
Pray as a family today the Rosary, reflecting on the Sorrowful Mysteries.

Friday:
Think today of the suffering families throughout the world.  Pray especially for them today.

Saturday:
“The family that prays together, stays together.”  Pray today with your family.

PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, you knew well what it meant to be ridiculed and rejected.  Give us strength to do what is right even if we meet with disapproval and pain.  Help us to respect others who choose the right.  May we honor their choice and learn from their example.  Amen.
