“I am the good shepherd.  I lay down my life for my sheep.” (John 10)

READINGS:
1. Acts 4:5-12
2. 1 John 3:1-2
3. Gospel John 10:11-18

REFLECTION:  There are countless quiet, everyday heroes of American life—parents who sacrifice long and hard so their children will know a better life than they have known.

Parents work hard and give up their own pleasures in order to build a secure future for their offspring.  Not only must they shepherd their children, they must also show them how to be shepherds themselves.

PRAYER:   The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In green pastures he gives me repose;
Beside restful waters he leads me;
He refreshes my soul.
He guides me in right paths
for his name’s sake.  (Psalm 23)

FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:

Monday:
As a parent or guardian of children, reflect on your gifts that assist you in being a “Good Shepherd” to others.

Tuesday:
Discuss tonight at dinner the parish priest as shepherd.  What considerations and cooperation do you offer your parish priest(s)?

Wednesday:
Pray the family rosary tonight for all those who are shepherding and caring for others.

Thursday:
The “Good Shepherd” is closely related to all those who serve one another.  Take time today to pray for those who serve in the military.

Friday:
Be a “Good Shepherd” today to someone.

Saturday:
Many are scattered for lack of a shepherd and become food for the wild beasts.  Pray for those who have strayed from their families and family values, those who have strayed from their religious roots.

PRAYER:
Jesus, shepherd of our souls, selfless in your caring, lead us forth to days of peace and of thoughtful sharing.  Free our life from ill and war; what is good in us restore.  Amen.
